Birgit Mertens is involved in different research projects concerning the safety evaluation of food-related compounds and the use of NAMs. She is also member of different (inter)national working groups in the domain of toxicology, with focus on the application of the 3R strategy and the assessment of public health risks. She is National Coordinator of the Test Methods Programme both at the European and OECD level and the Belgian contact point for the Preliminary Assessment of the Regulatory Relevance of Alternative Methods (PARERE) network.

Mieke Van Mulders is the driving force behind the RE-Place website and database. She is also responsible for contacting the Flemish researchers with expertise in the field of NAMs. She keeps track on the latest developments through her regular contacts with the European Reference Laboratory for Alternative Test Methods (EURL ECVAM) and her participation in workshops and courses, both nationally and internationally.

Maude Everaert is responsible for the Brussels part of the RE-Place project, which involves contacting the researchers in the Brussels region. She also supports Mieke in updating the website and maintaining the database.

Vera Rogiers has an outstanding expertise and know-how in the development of liver-based in vitro models for pharmaco-toxicological purposes. She is the founder of the Belgian Platform for Alternative Methods (BPAM) which was succeeded at European level by the "European Consensus Platform on 3R-Alternatives to Animal Experimentation" (ECOPA). Furthermore, she has also been a member of the ‘Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety’ (SCCS) from the EC for many years and is currently the co-chair.
