This year, for the first time, we will co-organize the Joint 3R Symposium in collaboration with the Innovation Centre-3Rs (IC-3Rs) and the EU TWINALT consortium. The symposium will take place from 19 to 21 September 2023, at the Health Campus of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Jette (Brussels). The theme will be ‘Emerging fields in 3Rs’.

Program & Topics

The Joint 3R symposium will kick-off on the 19th of September at noon. Before the start of the symposium, a closed session is organised for the members of the TWINAT consortium. Poster presenters are already welcomed to hang their poster during lunch time. The keynote speakers of the first day are Prof. Barbara Viviani (UMIL, Italy), Dr Birgit Mertens (Sciensano, Belgium), Prof. Sonia Fraga (INSA, Portugal) and Professor Albert Braeuning (BfR, Germany) who will discuss respectively Adverse Outcome Pathways for hazard identification, animal-free genotoxicity testing, in vitro assessment of nanomaterial hazard, and metabolic disruption in the liver.

Annalisa Gastaldello (European Commission, Italy) will kick off the second day by providing an overview of the 3Rs resources of the European Commission for both established researchers and the next generation scientists. We will then give a presentation about the RE-Place project and introduce the five experts who were selected from the RE-Place database to present their work on New Approach Methodologies. Their presentations will be focused on two themes: ‘Modelling tools in practise’ and ‘3D tissue models’. For the afternoon session which is fully dedicated to young researchers working in the field of 3Rs, we still have eight spots for oral presentations. You can still apply by submitting your abstract by the 15th of July (more information below).

On the last day, minister Bernard Clerfayt will open the symposium, which will tackle the replacement of animal experimentation in the fields of neurotoxicity and reproductive health. The program will include as keynote speakers Prof. Ellen Fritsche (HHU, Germany) who will give a presentation on an in vitro test battery for neurotoxicity, Prof. Terje Svingen (DTU, Denmark) who will discuss the effects of endocrine disruptors on the male reproductive system and Prof. Yoni Baert (VUB, Belgium) who will present his work on in vitro modelling of the testis. The full program is available via the website.
